Abu Simbel and the Aswan Dam.

Assuan

The history of Assuan goes back far into history with its initial settlement called Swnw, also known as Sunu or Swenu, far into the 1st dynasty around 3500 BC.

Over a long period it represented the southern border of (Upper) Egypt and gateway to sub-Saharan Africa, via which trade with Nubia (Nubian bowland) was conducted.

In ancient times Aswan also had an important role as a supplier of granite and rose granite, as well as plutonic rock, which, like prefabricated obelisks, statues and monolithic stones, were shipped mainly northwards, but were also used for future temples in and around Aswan.

The gods here were mainly Chnum, Satet, Anuket, Isis, Nephthys, Horus, Osiris and Seth to which many of the temples in Aswan and the surrounding area were dedicated, some of which can still be visited today.

Abu Simbel

The name Abu Simbel is a European conversion of the Arabic Abu Sunbul, a derivation of the ancient place name Ipsambul.

At the time of the kings of the New Kingdom, the region where the temples were built probably had the name Meha.
However, it has not yet been possible to make a definite assignment. These two rock temples were erected by King (Pharaoh) Ramses II of the 19th dynasty around 1300 BC.

The larger temple for him himself, the smaller Hathor temple for his large royal Gemalin Nefertari as a memory.

Historically Unique…

Already in the year 1963 started the UNESCO the biggest rescue campaign in the history of the Archäologie.

After the commissioning of the „old dam“ already built by the English in 1902 and still during the construction work of the „new dam“ inaugurated in 1971, temples like Abu Simbel, the Isis Temple and the Kalabsha Temple as well as about 35 villages were moved.
Nearly 150,000 people were resettled, most on the Egyptian side to Kom Ombo about 60 kilometers north of Aswan and on the Sudanese side to New Halfa in the Butana region.

the Process:  Overnight Assuan and Abu Simbel

Day 1

You will be picked up from your hotel early in the morning depending on the distance. Afterwards we drive in the direction of Assuan, but not without a reasonable coffee break.

After a small refreshment we continue directly to Aswan to the unfinished obelisk. Afterwards we make a small boat trip over on the Kitschener island around us the botanical garden to look at.

Back on the mainland we check in at our hotel after a short drive.
There we also have lunch, which consists of a local dish including drinks.

As soon as you have eaten your fill, we will take a short boat trip across the Nile to the island of Agilkia, where we will visit the Isis Temple of Philae.

After you have been fascinated there as before by the magnificent buildings, we will return to the mainland and the hustle and bustle of Aswan (Souk).

Here you can shop to your heart’s content and haggle for the best prices. When we get hungry, we will have dinner in a local restaurant again.

Afterwards we go back to our hotel, where you can process your experiences and impressions of this day.

Day 2

Early in the morning we check out of our hotel for a coffee, equipped with a lunch box and set off for Abu Simbel. Once there, we will be enchanted by the impressive monuments, which have found their way to Abu Simbel after an elaborate relocation.

After we have also explored this place extensively we drive back to Assuan on the Assuan dam.
Here old meets new architecture and one can let one’s eyes wander over the vastness of the small and also big reservoir beyond the dam wall.

After a short drive we cross again on a boat to the island Dokka in the restaurant of the same name El Dokka.
Here you can enjoy a fantastic view over the Nile before you start your way back.
