El Quseir & Zerib Kebir

El- Quseir, „Small Palace“, is one of the most important cities in Egypt today as it was then. In Zerib Kebir you can find reef formations of a special kind. Small huts made of palm fronds invite you to relax.

An excursion into the past and present

El Quseir

Our first stop takes us to an old Egyptian town with a great past.
El- Quseir, also called Al-Qusair or Kosseir in German „Kleine Burg“ or „Kleiner Palast“, is one of the most important cities of Egypt today.
It may seem rather unlikely, but in reality it hides a remarkable and undeniable story, which has to be discovered and preserved.

This place possessed then and still possesses today the oldest Egyptian port at all and was in ancient Egyptian time the hub in the trade with the today’s Horn of Africa, India, Yemen and Saudi Arabia and was later mainly used for embarkation and overshipping.
used by Mecca pilgrims.

The Ottoman fort, built by Sultan Selims in the 16th century and still in good condition today, was also of great importance. This fort dominated in its time above all the anchorages of the ships and accommodated a gigantic water reservoir.

It controlled all accesses to the city and stood as a line of defence, also with all its later occupiers including Napoleon, against attacks on this city from the sea side, for the protection of the inhabitants and trade.
In this fortress there is a museum explaining how ships were built in the past. There is also an insight into phosphate mining, Bedouin life and traditions, and military objects are presented.

There are also over 300 year old mosques in the town, as well as the shrine of the famous Sufi sheik ‚Abd el-Qadir el-Gilanī, who was buried here.

Zerib Kebir

Our second stop takes us to a dive and snorkel spot called „Zerib Kebir“ just a few minutes outside El Quesir.
Zerib Kebir, also called El-Kahf, or in German „Die Höhle“ is located about 60 km north of Port Ghalib and about 10 km south of El Quesir.

This place bears the name „The Cave“ not without reason, one finds here reef formations of the special kind, which one doesn’t get to see all too often in such a way.

Many canyons, gorges and as the name already says caves run through the reef on the south side and you can see breathtaking formations as well as coral gardens of a special kind.

But also on the beach of this wonderful diving and snorkeling spot you feel at home right away.

Sufficient parasols, sunbeds and small huts made of palm fronds adorn the picture and there is already a little bit of Robinson Crusoe about it, if you take a closer look at the palm huts.

Come with us on a journey into the ancient Egyptian time, as well as a fantastic underwater world.
