Zerib Kebir & Abu Sauatier

A trip to two of the most amazing places, Zerib Kebir & Abu Sauatier. Breathtaking formations of coral gardens with caves and canyons await you. Snorkel, dive, sunbathe, relax.

Come with us on a journey to two of the most amazing places you won’t find again in this way and combination. Dive into breathtaking formations of coral gardens, „caves and canyons“.

Zerib Kebir

Our first stop takes us to the beautiful dive and snorkel spot called „Zerib Kebir“. Zerib Kebir, also called El-Kahf, or in German „Die Höhle“ is located about 60 km north of Port Ghalib and about 10 km south of El Quesir.

You feel right at home on the beach. Sufficient sunshades, sunbeds, small huts made of palm fronds decorate the picture and there is already a little bit of Robinson Crusoe about it, if you look at the palm huts more closely. A shower and toilets are available.

This place has the name „The Cave“ not wrongly, one finds here reef formations of the special kind, which one doesn’t get to see all too often in such a way. Many canyons, gorges and as the name already says caves run through the reef on the south side and you can see breathtaking formations as well as coral gardens of a special kind.

On the north side there is a lush soft coral vegetation, where one simply cannot see oneself full due to its graceful movements in the gentle sea cradle. It is decorated by many fish on the north and south side, such as the widely spread King Solomon Island dwarf perch, surgeonfish but also scorpionfish and from time to time barracudas.

Situated at the sandy bottom in the middle of the north and south reef you often find sea needles, reef calamari and from time to time a hawksbill turtle scurries through the picture.

Abu Sauatier

Our second stop leads us to „Abu Sauatier“.

Located about 10 km north of El Quseir, surrounded by colorful mountains and yet close to the untouched Red Sea. Also here we have on the beach sun loungers with umbrellas, small huts from palm fronds and also here showers and toilets are present. An oasis to relax and enjoy.

This place got its name from former workers, who during the British colonial period (1882-1922) and beyond were living in today’s „Gost City“ and mined phosphate in the region for the English. They went swimming at this place and injured themselves at the sharp-edged corals. In conversations with each other they told each other about stones as big and sharp as knives. Abu Sauatier, also called Satur, means „father of the knife“ or „big knife“.

Not without reason.

The reefs in Abu Sauatier have similar characteristics as in Zerib Kebir. Caves, canyons and gorges decorate the picture, as well as the most different kinds of gradually sloping to steeply dropping rugged reefs.

Numerous colorful corals and their inhabitants will welcome you on your discovery tour. Among them are fire fish, stone fish and puffer fish. Even a moraine seems to have found its home here, you’ll almost always find it. In addition there are numerous trumpet-, clown- and triggerfish – just to name a few.

The University of Vienna even found out in a study that within only 2 weeks, almost all fish of the Red Sea can be seen at this reef.
